ABOUT THE PROJECT

A new Cultural Center and Park Headquarters is coming to Hueco Tanks State Park. This facility will serve as a welcoming gateway, offering visitors meaningful ways to connect with the site’s cultural history, natural beauty, and recreational offerings—even when the park interior is at capacity.

🧭 Vision

The Cultural Center will provide:

  • Orientation to help visitors navigate and understand the park
  • Interpretation and education about the site’s deep cultural and environmental significance
  • A gathering space that enhances access, equity, and engagement for all visitors

🎯 Goals

  • Honor the site’s heritage through thoughtful, respectful design
  • Enhance the visitor experience, including accessibility and orientation
  • Restore Escontrias House to reflect its historical character
  • Celebrate culture, from ideas and traditions to artifacts and place-based storytelling

💡 Culture includes symbols, language, values, and material objects—woven together to reflect our shared human experience.

🧩 Key Considerations

As we plan and design, we’re evaluating:

  • Cultural resource protection
  • Views and landscape integration
  • Visitor flow and trail connections
  • Sustainable growth and minimal environmental impact
  • Stories of those with personal ties to the park
